Philadelphia Urban Food & Fitness Alliance (PUFFA) Vision

The reconnection of Philadelphians to the surrounding land and to food; the development of social capital within neighborhood communities; and the formation of lasting system changes that support physical activity and healthy eating habits among youth

About Philadelphia

Philadelphia is a mosaic of more than 100 neighborhoods representing diverse cultures, traditions and cuisines. Located on the coast and surrounded by numerous public parks, the city has water access, plenty of walking options and is often lauded as a walkable and bike-friendly city.

Yet these resources are not accessible to all residents. Fear of crime-especially in poorer neighborhoods-keeps many people indoors, limiting opportunities for physical activity and impeding the development of social ties. These same communities also suffer from chronic diseases in disparate numbers and experience inequitable treatment for such health issues. Obesity and type 2 diabetes are especially high among Philadelphia's black, Latino and underinsured youth. Moreover, despite growing numbers of farmers' markets and grocery stores, the communities most impacted by these illnesses continue to report limited access to fresh and affordable foods.

There has been a growing interest among food- and fitness-focused coalitions to meet the needs of these communities. With support from a mix of government, nonprofit and advocacy groups, the City of Brotherly Love is ready to make its neighborhoods safe and inviting. By working together, the PUFFA (Philadelphia Urban Food & Fitness Alliance) plans to improve fresh food and physical activity options for the city's diverse communities.
