Oakland Community

Health for Oakland's People & Environment (HOPE) Collaborative Vision

To create access to fresh, affordable, healthy, local food, to create safe and attractive spaces for play and physical activity, and to build strong, local, sustainable economies, all in Oakland's most vulnerable neighborhoods

About Oakland

Despite its prime urban location across the bridge from San Francisco, and its ideal climate for diverse agricultural production, the city of Oakland faces great challenges accessing affordable, fresh, healthy foods and safe, inviting environments in which to be active.

Gentrification, disparate revitalization efforts and poorly planned commercial incentives and disincentives have negatively impacted Oakland's racially and economically diverse neighborhoods. Functional grocery stores have ceded ground to liquor and convenience stores, and Oakland's residents lack green community spaces and safe and usable routes for walking and biking. As a result, low-income residents suffer disproportionately from obesity and related ailments.

Oakland's HOPE Collaborative (Health for Oakland's People & Environment) aims to stay responsive to local residents' needs, while building a diverse and representative coalition to advance lasting change.
